東京23区より一回り大きい程度の都市国家・シンガポールは、貿易拠点として整備されたことに歴史のはじまりを持ち、その平坦で水はけの悪い土地ゆえに、大勢の人が集まって暮らす近代国家・都市として圧倒的な不利を抱えている。受容の半分以上を隣国マレーシアから購入している状況は、政治的な不安定さを呼び、また生物が生きていくことの基盤の不安定さでもある。
そんな土地で、なんとかして水を確保し利用していこうとする土木技術・政治的判断の行使は、いっぽうで人間がどのように制度を整え、言葉を定義し、物質としてそれらを実行するのか、ということを端的に示している。ある土地に、人が集まり暮らそうとするとはどういうことなのか、その根源的な問いを考えるヒントがシンガポールにはある。

本作は、シンガポールの都市・社会・国家について水の流れを辿りながら語るレクチャーパフォーマンスの第一部と、東東京の低海抜地帯をオーディオガイドとともに歩くツアーパフォーマンスの第二部から成る。
第一部では写真・映像・模型を複合した語りと身振りで、ある線画惹かれることが、その周辺を定義し、人間が利用可能な対象にしていく過程が示される。第二部では、ゴール地点となる隅田川の方角のみが示された簡易なマップと方位磁石を手に、観客は個別に歩き出す。隅田川に至るまでに横断する3つの都市インフラの線を超えながら、観客はときに同じ道を、ときに異なる道を歩いていく。シンガポールの語りとイメージを想起しながらの歩行は、東京のイメージに重なりながら、見知ったはずの都市を変容させていく。

シンガポールという都市に照らすことで現代都市は土地と人間の関係から再考可能となる。今後、東京以外の国内外諸都市でも公演を検討している。


Singapore, a city-state slightly larger than the center area of Tokyo, began when it was developed as a trading center. The flat, poorly drained land has disadvantages as a modern state and city where many people live together. The fact that more than half of the water used in the country is purchased from neighboring Malaysia creates political uncertainty. It also implies the instability of the foundations for human life.
The civil engineering and political decisions to struggle to secure and use water on the land are straightforward examples of how humans set up systems, define words, and implement them materially. Singapore offers hints for considering the fundamental question of what it means for people to gather and live in a particular land.

This work consists of two parts: the first part, a lecture performance that tells about the city, society, and state of Singapore by following the water flow, and the second part, a tour performance that walks through the low-altitude areas of Tokyo with an audio guide. The first part is a narrative that combines photographs, video, and models, showing the process of drawing certain lines to define the surroundings and make the object usable for humans. In the second part, the audience walks individually with a simple map and a compass showing only the direction of the Sumida River, which is the goal point. While crossing three lines of urban infrastructure, audiences sometimes walk the same path, sometimes different, to get to the Sumida River. Walking while recalling the narratives and images of Singapore, overlapping with the images of Tokyo, transforms the city as we know it.

By referring to Singapore, we can reconsider modern cities regarding the relationship between land and people. We are considering performing it in other cities in Japan and abroad.
